The granular WinterGuard is what we see most on Dallas homes built after 2010, when code started requiring ice-barrier at eaves even in Texas climate zones.

To identify what you’ve got, we look for the printed roll label in your attic or along the eave line if the previous crew left a tag. DiamondDeck has a blue edge stripe, RoofRunner is gray with a CertainTeed logo repeat, and WinterGuard granular has a sandpaper texture you can feel through the shingles if you know where to check. Aftermarket synthetics exist, but on CertainTeed systems we prefer OEM. For decking, we use 7/16-inch OSB or 15/32-inch plywood to match existing thickness exactly. Mismatch the deck height and your shingle exposure shifts, which is how you get the wavy look down the street that nobody wants.

Signs Your CertainTeed Underlayment & Deck Repair Is Failing

• Water stains on ceilings directly below valleys or penetrations. CertainTeed WinterGuard is self-sealing around nails, but if the granular surface has cracked from UV exposure during a delayed shingle installation, water tracks along the deck instead of shedding. In Dallas, that UV baking happens fast on south-facing slopes.
• Soft or spongy spots when walking the roof. The OSB or plywood deck beneath has absorbed moisture and begun delaminating. We find this most often in Lakewood and M-Streets homes with original cedar shake decks that were never fully removed before the CertainTeed reshingling.

• Granule loss concentrated above specific deck sections. The shingles are baking because the underlayment underneath has separated from the deck, creating an air gap that superheats the asphalt. We’ve measured deck temperatures 40 degrees higher where this happens.
